forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.93 out of 5 (1,023 reviews). Several guests praise the attentive staff, mentioning that breakfast was adapted to be easier for their children to eat and that their child was given a dinosaur eraser at check-in. Families also like having Japanese-style tatami rooms available. On the other hand, some guests note that the women's bath is a smaller room rather than a large communal bath and that the water had been left over from the previous bather, so it is worth keeping in mind if women in your group plan to bathe.

Overview

Hotel Fukui Castle is a business hotel beside the inner moat of the Fukui Castle ruins, about an 8-minute walk from the west exit of JR Fukui Station. Of its 60 rooms, 17 are six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami rooms without a bath, which also suit student groups and other group bookings. Family-friendly touches include children's tableware available to borrow and toys in the lobby. The large bathing room is for men, while the small bathing room is for women and gives priority to guests staying in rooms without a bath.

Rooms

The hotel has 60 rooms in total: Single (14 sq m, bed 120 cm wide); Double (14 sq m, bed 140 cm wide, for 1-2 guests); Twin (21 sq m, beds 100 cm wide, for 2-3 guests when an extra bed is used); Deluxe Twin (24 sq m, beds 100 cm wide, for 2-4 guests, with up to 2 extra beds), the largest room in the hotel; an eight-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room (with bath and toilet, futon bedding for up to 4, for 1-4 guests); a six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room (with bath and toilet, futon bedding for up to 2, plus 1 extra bed available, for 1-2 guests); and a six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room (toilet but no bath, futon bedding for up to 2, for 1-3 guests). Many plans have child rates, so families are well catered for. There are 17 six-tatami-mat rooms of the no-bath type, which also suit student groups and other group bookings. Since January 2025, every room has had a toilet with a washing function. Note that rooms without a bath do not have shampoo, conditioner or body soap provided; guests are asked to use those in the second-floor bathing rooms.

Dining

Breakfast is a Japanese-style meal served in the dining room, with rice grown in Fukui Prefecture from the Koshihikari variety. Rice and coffee come with unlimited refills. The price is 990 yen including tax, and it is served from 6:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. Reservations are required by 8 p.m. on the day of your stay. Dinner is served only for group bookings and is not offered with an ordinary stay.

Baths

A large bathing room (for men) and a small bathing room (for women) are on the second floor, open from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The small bathing room may be used only by female guests staying in rooms without a bath, and it may be unavailable if no female guests have booked a room of that type. Use of the small bathing room is limited to 30 minutes per room, and from 6 a.m. only the shower may be used. Guests in rooms with a bath and toilet — the Twin, Double, Deluxe Twin, eight-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room and the six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room with bath and toilet — can bathe in their own room.

Family-Friendly Features

Children's tableware is available to borrow, and guests are welcome to make use of it. The lobby has toys that children enjoy, and the amenity bar at the front desk also has children's toys and indoor slippers. Humidifiers and air purifiers are available to borrow for guests who want to adjust the air in their room. Rooms can be chosen to match the size of the family: the six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room without a bath, the eight-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room that fits up to 4 futon sets, or the six-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami room with bath and toilet that can take an extra bed.

Access

From the west exit of JR Fukui Station, head toward the Fukui Prefectural Government Office (the Fukui Castle ruins) and walk through the castle grounds; the hotel is about 8 minutes on foot. Parking is not reserved in advance and is used in order of arrival, at 500 yen per night for a standard car. If the lot is full, guests are directed to the pay parking lot next door. The front entrance is locked from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m.; you can ask for it to be unlocked via the intercom, but entry is not possible between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Near the hotel is Gosensui Park, which retains the atmosphere of the old castle town and is a park well suited to families with children.
