About Yamakawa Port
Yamakawa Port sits on Yamakawa Bay in Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is the departure and arrival port for the Ferry Nankyu, which connects Yamakawa with Nejime in the town of Minamiosumi. The bay is separated from the open sea by a sand spit, so waves rarely reach it, and it has been used as a harbor since long ago. It also serves as a refuge port when a typhoon approaches. The port is a working fishing harbor too, and the roadside station Michi-no-Eki Yamakawako "Katsuo Kaido" (a rest stop with shops and food) is nearby. It is also the place where Saigo Takamori, a leading figure of Japan's 19th-century political upheaval, waited for his ship on each of his two exiles to remote islands. The port is a bit of a distance from the nearest station, JR Yamakawa Station.
