Matsushima Sakan Shoan is a small stand-alone inn of 11 rooms on a cape in Matsushima-machi, Miyagi. There is a detached room with its own open-air bath, as well as a family-friendly room with two connecting spaces and beds. Co-sleeping is allowed, child rates are set for babies, toddlers and elementary school children, and the children's meal can be chosen from an upper-grade or lower-grade menu, so the inn has families with children in mind. Many of the rooms also have a wooden indoor bath, so you can bathe in your room as well as in the communal bath.
Rooms
There are 11 guest rooms in all, in a range of sizes and layouts. The 14-tatami Japanese-style tatami room, with sweeping views of the Matsushima scenery, sleeps 1 to 4 guests and has a wooden indoor bath, a powder room and a toilet with a washlet. The 12.5-tatami twin room in the corner of the first floor sleeps 1 to 3 guests, with two beds measuring 120 cm wide by 200 cm long; futon bedding is provided for parties of 3 or more. There is a twin room of the same size in the corner of the second floor, also sleeping 1 to 3 guests. The room we would recommend for families is the one with two connecting spaces of 12 and 6 tatami mats plus beds, sleeping 2 to 5 guests; its hinoki cypress in-room bath is popular as well. The detached room, a 15-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a reception room, has its own private open-air bath and sleeps 1 to 5 guests.
Dining
For dinner you can choose between a private dining room with sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating and the restaurant with its rows of tables, and for breakfast you can pick any start time between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The meals are kaiseki courses built around Sanriku seafood and local vegetables, and if you tell the inn about allergies or ingredients you would rather avoid when you book, they will accommodate you as far as they can. Children's meals are priced separately for the upper and lower grades of elementary school, but a child in the lower grades may choose the upper-grade meal, or the other way around.
Baths
The baths are not onsen, but there is a distinctively designed communal bath and open-air bath for men and for women alike. The men's communal bath has an indoor bath scented with hinoki cypress and an open, rocky open-air bath; the women's has an octagonal indoor bath with stained glass and an open-air bath with pesticide-free roses floating in the water. The communal baths are open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. the next morning, and there is no private-hire bath. Some rooms have a wooden indoor bath, so you can bathe with your child in your room rather than going to the communal bath.
Family-Friendly Features
On the standard plan, up to 3 children may co-sleep. Child rates are 22,000 yen for the upper grades of elementary school and 16,500 yen for the lower grades; for babies and toddlers, 16,500 yen with both meals and bedding, 6,600 yen with bedding only, and 3,300 yen with neither meals nor bedding. Rates differ by plan. Babies and toddlers cannot be accepted with meals but no bedding. Children's yukata can be laid out in your room, so it helps to give your child's age, gender and height when you book. The Kura salon takes on an adult-oriented atmosphere in the evening, when wine and whiskey are set out, so it is not well suited to visits with young children.
Access
The nearest station is Takagimachi Station on the JR Senseki Line, about 8 minutes away by car. It is about 12 minutes from the Matsushima-Kaigan IC on the Sanriku Expressway, and there is free parking for 25 cars with no reservation needed. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout at 12 p.m., so you can stay up to 21 hours - a schedule that is unlikely to feel rushed even with a small child.
