LOTTE ARAI RESORT is a year-round mountain resort spread across the foot of Mount Myoko. Its 245 guest rooms, split between the Arai Wing and the Lodge Wing, range from superior rooms to deluxe rooms, suites and Koala's March character rooms, with triples and Fours (4-person) rooms for families as well. Children aged 0 to 3 co-sleep free of charge, up to 2 per room, and cribs, bed guards and strollers for use inside the building are available to borrow. There is a playroom, indoor and outdoor activities, the Hoshizora onsen and an indoor pool, and in the snow season the ski area is right outside the door.
Rooms
There are 245 guest rooms, divided among the Arai Wing, the Lodge Wing, the Club Wing and the Nest Wing. The Superior Triple is 31-40 sq m and sleeps 3, while the Superior Family Triple is 42 sq m and sleeps 4. Rakuten's room listing gives the 31 sq m triple as sleeping up to 3 and the 40 sq m family triple as sleeping up to 5, so the maximum occupancy differs by booking site. Some connecting rooms are available and require a reservation. There are 2 barrier-free accessible rooms in the Arai Wing and 1 in the Lodge Wing. All rooms are non-smoking and come with a humidifier and a toilet with a washing function.
Baths and Onsen
The Hoshizora onsen on the 2nd floor of the Arai Wing is a natural hot spring welling up from 1,750 m underground, with a communal bath, an open-air rock bath, a lying-down bath, a waterfall bath (utaseyu), a cold-water bath and a sauna. The spring source is called Omoge Onsen, and the spring water is a simple onsen (hypotonic, weakly alkaline). Staying guests can use it free of charge throughout their stay, from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. (last admission 9:30 a.m.) and from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. (last admission 10:30 p.m.) on weekdays, and from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. (last admission 10:30 p.m.) on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Anyone wearing a diaper, adult or child, cannot enter the bathing area, and for children the use of a baby bath is suggested instead. Children of elementary school age and younger cannot use the bath on their own. There is no private-hire bath. The bathing tax is 150 yen per night for guests aged 12 and over.
Family-Friendly Features
Children aged 0 to 3 co-sleep free of charge, up to 2 per room and up to 1 per bed. Ages 4 to 12 pay the children's rate and guests aged 13 and over pay the adult rate. The plans on Ikyu.com (a Japanese booking site) state that elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate. Dinner and breakfast are served in the restaurants, including the Western buffet THE PLATE, the Japanese restaurant Asahi and the shabu-shabu restaurant Yashiro. At THE PLATE, the buffet is 2,200 yen for children at breakfast and 3,300 yen for children at dinner, with the children's rate applying to ages 4 to 12. In-room dining is not available. Booking dinner in advance is recommended. Coin laundries open 24 hours are located in both the Arai Wing and the Lodge Wing.
Access
About 10 minutes by car from the Arai Smart IC and about 20 minutes by car from Joetsu-Myoko Station. A free shuttle bus runs to and from the west exit of Joetsu-Myoko Station by reservation only, booked by 7 a.m. on the day you plan to use it. Parking is free: indoors for guests in the Lodge Wing and outdoors for guests in the Arai Wing. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to midnight and checkout is at 11 a.m. Late checkout costs 1,100 yen per room for 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2,200 yen per room for 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., tax included; it cannot be reserved in advance and may not be available when the hotel is busy.
