Overview

Kyoto Arashiyama Onsen Togetsutei is a long-established ryokan known for its cuisine, standing at the south end of Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, Kyoto, and founded in the 30th year of the Meiji era. It consists of Shuzankaku on the hillside and Hekisenkaku by the river, and in the communal bath, which is connected underground, guests can enjoy Arashiyama natural onsen. Dinner is a Kyoto kaiseki that changes monthly, and breakfast is a Japanese meal that includes yudofu (simmered tofu) from Morika. Children are accepted as guests, with two kids' meal sets available according to age. Guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms with a hinoki cypress bath, so they suit family stays as well.

Rooms

Shuzankaku on the hillside has three types of Japanese-style tatami rooms with a hinoki cypress indoor bath: a 6-tatami room for 1-3 guests, an 8-tatami room for 1-4 guests, and a 10-tatami room for 2-5 guests, each with a bidet-equipped toilet. Shuzankaku also has three rooms with a semi-open-air hinoki bath that combine an 8-tatami Japanese-style room with 2 beds: Kogo no Ma at 69.7 sq m, Daikaku no Ma at 77.8 sq m, and Atago no Ma at 78.9 sq m, each for 1-4 guests. Shuzankaku further has Arashiyama no Ma (14 tatami mats: an 8-tatami Japanese-style room plus a 6-tatami anteroom), where you can soak in the natural onsen while looking out over the garden. It sleeps 2-7 guests, so it works well for larger families. In Hekisenkaku by the river, Seiryo no Ma (66.1 sq m, 1-4 guests) combines an 8-tatami Japanese-style room with 2 beds and a semi-open-air hinoki bath. There is also Rokuo no Ma (12 tatami mats), a room with an open-air bath for 2-5 guests, and Horin no Ma (an 8-tatami Japanese-style room plus 2 beds), a room with an open-air bath created in spring 2026. Children cannot use Horin no Ma. Note that Hekisenkaku has no elevator, so care is needed when moving around with a stroller.

Dining

Dinner is a seasonal Kyoto kaiseki that changes monthly, and breakfast is a Japanese breakfast with a generous number of dishes, including yudofu (simmered tofu) from Morika, Arashiyama's celebrated tofu shop. Meals are served either in a dining room or in your room, and the location cannot be chosen. For children, two kids' meal sets are available according to age, at 2,420 yen and 4,820 yen. At breakfast, sharing portions from the parents' meals is enough, and items such as rice are provided free of charge. If there are ingredients a guest cannot eat because of an allergy, the ryokan will accommodate this if told in advance, but changes cannot be made on the day.

Baths and Onsen

The communal bath in Shuzankaku uses Arashiyama natural onsen, which first flowed in the 16th year of the Heisei era. The spring water is a simple onsen (a hypotonic alkaline hot spring) and is said to feel gentle on the skin. It can be used from 4 p.m. to midnight and from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.; it is unavailable between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. There is also a private-hire bath, Tsukuyomi no Yu, where you can relax without worrying about other guests, with a capacity of up to 4 people. It is available in the evening from 4 p.m. to midnight (last entry 11 p.m.) and in the morning from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. (last entry 8 a.m.). Because the ryokan does not hold a public bathhouse license, the onsen cannot be used without staying overnight.

Family-Friendly Points

Children are accepted as guests. For a child aged 3 or over who needs neither meals nor bedding, a facility use fee of 3,300 yen including tax applies. However, room-only plans cannot accept children, so families with children need to choose a different plan, such as one with dinner and breakfast. Children also cannot use Horin no Ma, the room with an open-air bath. Humidifiers are available to borrow for guest rooms, which helps when caring for children in dry seasons. Barrier-free provisions include wheelchairs available to borrow, Western-style toilets in the rooms, and meals prepared with consideration for allergies. There is no pool, indoor or outdoor.

Access

The ryokan stands at the south end of Togetsukyo Bridge, a convenient starting point for a walk through Sagano. From Kyoto Station it is about 30 minutes by taxi, at a fare of around 3,000 yen. By city bus, take the No. 28 bus bound for Daikakuji from the bus terminal at the Karasuma exit of Kyoto Station and get off at the Arashiyama-koen stop after about 50 minutes. On the Hankyu Kyoto Line, transfer to the Arashiyama Line at Katsura Station; from Arashiyama Station it is a 4-minute walk. Guests arriving by car can use the parking free of charge.
