A small 15-room ryokan at the southern end of Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, proud of its Arashiyama Onsen (a hypotonic weakly alkaline spring said to be good for the skin) and its Kyoto kaiseki. The panoramic open-air bath, the only one in Arashiyama, looks out over Togetsukyo Bridge, and the private-hire open-air bath that families can use is popular too. Guests can enjoy the Kyoto kaiseki, which changes monthly, as in-room dining, and with allergy accommodation and a plan that includes Kyoto Aquarium tickets, the ryokan suits family trips combined with Arashiyama sightseeing.

Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada is a hot-spring ryokan in Arashiyama Onsen at the southern end of Togetsukyo Bridge, where Kyoto kaiseki (a seasonal multi-course meal) is served as in-room dining. Co-sleeping is available for up to 3 children, and babies and toddlers have rates that depend on the combination of meals and bedding. Elementary school children have rates set by grade, and there is also a private-hire open-air bath the family can use together. Rooms range from 7.5-tatami to 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms, and detached rooms with an open-air onsen bath are also available.
Rooms
There are 15 rooms in all: 11 standard rooms, 2 rooms with an onsen bath and 2 rooms in the detached Sankaian. Standard rooms range from a 7.5-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (no bath, for 2 to 3 guests) up to 8-, 10- and 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms with a bath and toilet, which sleep 2 to 4, 2 to 5 and 2 to 6 guests respectively. The rooms with an onsen bath are a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with an open-air onsen bath and an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a stone onsen bath; neither has a view. The detached Sankaian is a special room combining a Japanese-style tatami room and a Western-style room with twin beds, plus an open-air onsen bath and a bath and toilet. It sleeps up to 4 guests, with futon bedding provided from the third guest onward. Getting from the third floor of the main building to Sankaian means a connecting walkway of about 40 m with a few small steps. Please note that the Japanese-style bedroom with twin beds is for 2 guests only and cannot accommodate children, including children under school age who would be co-sleeping.
Dining
Dinner is basically served as in-room dining: a Kyoto kaiseki menu that changes monthly and uses seasonal Kyoto ingredients. Breakfast is served in the dining area, where two favorites are oboro tofu (soft, freshly set tofu) that you make yourself by adding nigari (a natural coagulant) and grilled fish chosen from 3 kinds. Guests staying in the detached Sankaian can choose between in-room dining and the dining area. For children, you can choose between a lunch course at 2,750 yen and a dinner course at 4,400 yen, and either can be ordered at either mealtime depending on how much your child eats. Children's breakfast is 2,200 yen. Allergies can be accommodated if you let the ryokan know by 3 days before your stay. Because everything is cooked in the same kitchen, however, trace amounts of ingredients not used in a dish may still be present.
Baths and Onsen
Arashiyama Onsen is a hypotonic alkaline simple spring, said to be good for the skin and for conditions such as neuralgia and sensitivity to cold. Because the spring water is not strong, you can bathe during pregnancy, though the ryokan advises consulting your own doctor if you have any concerns. On the rooftop floor of the main building there is a panoramic open-air bath looking out over Arashiyama; the only way up from the third floor to the rooftop is by stairs. The third floor also has an indoor bath and an open-air bath. When you would rather bathe privately, there is a private-hire open-air bath that families can use together (2,200 yen per group for 40 minutes, reservation required). The private-hire open-air bath is available only to guests who are dining or staying at the ryokan.

Access
The ryokan is a 5-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station and about 5 minutes by car from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. A free shuttle service runs from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, but advance reservations are not accepted; instead, you call with your arrival time on the day of your stay. Free parking is provided for 10 cars, but the parking that is free for staying guests is about 200 m from Hanaikada, and without advance notice you may not be able to park there.
