A small 15-room ryokan standing at the southern end of Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, it takes pride in the Arashiyama Onsen waters (a hypotonic, mildly alkaline spring said to be beneficial for the skin) and in its Kyoto kaiseki. The view open-air bath, the only one in Arashiyama, looks out over Togetsukyo Bridge, and guests also like the private-hire open-air bath that families can use together. The monthly-changing Kyoto kaiseki is served as in-room dining, and with allergy accommodation and a plan that includes Kyoto Aquarium tickets, the ryokan suits family trips combined with sightseeing in Arashiyama.

Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada is an onsen ryokan at the southern end of Togetsukyo Bridge, where Kyoto kaiseki is served as in-room dining. Co-sleeping is available for up to 3 children, and rates for babies and toddlers are set according to the combination of meals and bedding. Elementary school children have rates set by school grade, and there is a private-hire open-air bath that families can use together. Rooms range from 7.5-tatami to 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms, and you can also choose the detached building with an open-air onsen bath.
Rooms
There are 15 rooms in all, divided into 11 standard rooms, 2 rooms with an onsen bath and 2 rooms in the detached Sankaian. Standard rooms range from a 7.5-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (no bath, for 2 to 3 guests) up to 8-, 10- and 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms with a bathroom and toilet, sleeping 2 to 4, 2 to 5 and 2 to 6 guests respectively. The rooms with an onsen bath are a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with an open-air onsen bath and an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a stone onsen bath; neither has a view. The detached Sankaian is a special room where a Japanese-style tatami room and a Western-style room with twin beds come with an open-air onsen bath and a bathroom and toilet; it sleeps up to 4 guests, and from the third guest onward futon bedding is laid out. Getting from the third floor of the main building to Sankaian means a connecting walkway of about 40 m with a few small steps. Please note that the Japanese-style bedroom with twin beds is for 2 guests only and cannot accommodate children, including children under school age who are co-sleeping.
Dining
Dinner is basically served as in-room dining, a Kyoto kaiseki menu that changes monthly and uses seasonal Kyoto ingredients. Breakfast is served in the dining area, where the oboro tofu (soft, freshly set tofu) that you make yourself by stirring in nigari coagulant and a choice of three kinds of grilled fish are both popular; guests staying in the detached Sankaian can choose between in-room dining and the dining area. For children, you can choose between a 2,750-yen lunch course and a 4,400-yen dinner course, and either can be ordered at either mealtime depending on how much your child eats. Children's breakfast is 2,200 yen. Allergies can be accommodated if you let the ryokan know by 3 days before your stay, though because everything is cooked in the same kitchen, please be aware that trace amounts of ingredients not used in a dish may still be mixed in.
Baths and Onsen
Arashiyama Onsen is a hypotonic alkaline simple spring, said to be beneficial for the skin and for conditions such as neuralgia and sensitivity to cold. Bathing is possible during pregnancy, as this is not an onsen with strong spring qualities, but the ryokan advises consulting your own doctor if you have any concerns. On the rooftop floor of the main building there is a view open-air bath that looks out over Arashiyama, and the only way up from the third floor to the rooftop is by stairs. The third floor also has an indoor bath and an open-air bath. When you would rather bathe privately, there is a private-hire open-air bath that families can use together (2,200 yen per group for 40 minutes, reservation required). Use of the private-hire open-air bath is limited to guests who are dining or staying at the ryokan.

Access
The ryokan is a 5-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station and about 5 minutes by car from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. A free shuttle service from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station is also available, but advance reservations are not accepted; instead you call with your arrival time on the day of your stay. Free parking is provided for 10 cars, but the parking that is free for staying guests is about 200 m from Hanaikada, and without advance notice you may not be able to park there.
