Kankoryokan Sugise is a Japanese-style ryokan on the banks of the Takami River in Higashiyoshino-mura, Nara. Every room looks out over the clear stream, and the seasonal kaiseki cuisine features wild ayu (sweetfish), matsutake mushrooms and botan nabe (wild boar hot pot). Rooms
Every guest room at Sugise is a Japanese-style tatami room, including Azami, Takami, Kunimi and Momo. All of them look out over the Takami River. Azami is a 10-tatami room without a bath or toilet, for 2 to 6 guests. Takami is also 10 tatami mats without a bath or toilet, suited to 1 to 3 guests. Kunimi and Momo likewise have no bath or toilet; Kunimi takes 2 to 4 guests and Momo takes 2 to 6. There are 11 rooms in total.
Dining
Dinner centers on kaiseki cuisine, with seasonal dishes such as mountain vegetables, amago trout, a full course of wild ayu (sweetfish), matsutake mushroom dishes and wild botan nabe (wild boar hot pot). For both breakfast and dinner you can choose between a private room and the banquet hall, which makes eating with young children easier without worrying about other guests. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged. From May to September, a Yamato beef teppanyaki course is available at the BBQ house on the riverbank.
Baths
There is one communal bath and one family bath, and both can be booked for private use. Bathing hours run from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. The baths use mineral spring water that rises beside the Takami River. Day-use bathing is not available.
Family-Friendly Features
Children's room rates are set by age: 70% of the adult rate for upper-grade elementary school children and 50% for lower-grade elementary school children. Children under school age with meals and futon bedding pay 40% of one adult's room rate, and it is also possible to book with futon bedding only or meals only. A humidifier is available to borrow among the room equipment, and some rooms have one installed.
Access
The nearest stations are Kintetsu Haibara Station and Yamato-Kamiichi Station, both about 40 minutes away by car or bus. There is parking for 30 cars, free of charge and on a first-come, first-served basis. In the Takami River behind the ryokan, you can play in the water and fish.
