Overview
Benesse House, on Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, opened in 1992 as a facility that brings a museum and a hotel together as one. Every building was designed by Tadao Ando, and the accommodation is spread across four wings - Museum, Oval, Park and Beach - with 65 rooms in all. Beach stands just a few steps from the water's edge, and all of its rooms are suites. Children aged 5 and under can stay in Park and Beach; in Museum and Oval, guests are asked to refrain from staying with children aged 5 and under. In Park and Beach, one child aged 5 and under per bed in use can co-sleep free of charge. A crib is among the equipment and amenities, a humidifier is available to borrow, and meals accommodating allergies can be arranged. There is no onsen, communal bath, pool or childcare service.
Rooms
The rooms bookable through Rakuten Travel and Ikyu.com are those in Park and Beach, added in 2006 and rare among Ando's buildings for being made of wood. The Park Twin is 28 sq m with a bath and toilet; the bathroom keeps the bath and toilet separate, with a washing area beside the bathtub and a toilet with a washing function. The Park Deluxe Twin is also 28 sq m with a bath and toilet, and all of these rooms are on the second floor, with terraces looking out over a garden dotted with a variety of artworks and across the Seto Inland Sea. The restaurants take reservations, and you need to book in advance regardless of your accommodation plan. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so a restaurant may be unavailable when fully booked. On plans that include breakfast, a buffet is served at Terrace Restaurant from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and breakfast is free of charge for children aged 5 and under who are co-sleeping. Depending on reservation numbers, the breakfast menu may change from the buffet to an American breakfast. Access
To reach Naoshima, it is about 50 minutes by Shikoku Kisen ferry from Takamatsu Port to Miyanoura Port, or about 20 minutes from Uno Port by Shikoku Kisen ferry or small passenger boat. From Miyanoura Port it is about 10 minutes by car. Staying guests can use the guest-only bus, which runs in step with ferry arrivals and departures, with no reservation required; if you board at Miyanoura Port, the driver takes your luggage and delivers it to your room once the room is ready. If you arrive on Naoshima at 7:15 p.m. or later, a dedicated car is arranged instead, and you need to request this when booking. Parking is available for 20 cars, free of charge and with no reservation required, but general vehicles are not allowed into the Benesse Art Site Naoshima area: give the staff at the entrance to the grounds the name your booking is under and follow their instructions. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and checkout is at 11 a.m.
