Overview
Benesse House, on Naoshima in Kagawa, combines an art museum and a hotel and opened in 1992. Every building was designed by Tadao Ando, and guests stay in four buildings, Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, with 65 rooms in total. Beach stands just a few steps from the water's edge, and every room there is a suite. Children aged 5 and under can stay in Park and Beach; in Museum and Oval, guests are asked not to stay with children aged 5 and under. The Beach building will close for facility maintenance from January 4 to March 4, 2027, and during that period only the Park building can accommodate children aged 5 and under (the entire hotel closes from January 12 to 18, 2027). In Park and Beach, one child aged 5 and under per bed in use can co-sleep free of charge (except in the Beach Suite Double). The equipment list includes a crib, humidifiers are available to borrow, and meals accommodating allergies can be arranged. There is no onsen, communal bath, pool or childcare service.
Rooms
The rooms you can book through Rakuten Travel and Ikyu.com (a Japanese booking site) are in Park and Beach, added in 2006 and, unusually for Ando's architecture, built of wood. The Park Twin is 28 sq m with its own bath and toilet: the toilet is separate from the bathroom, the bathtub has a washing area beside it, and the toilet has a washing function. The Park Deluxe Twin is also 28 sq m with its own bath and toilet. All Park Deluxe Twin rooms are on the second floor, and from the terrace you can take in a garden set with a variety of artworks and the Seto Inland Sea beyond. The Park Double is 28 sq m and falls in the category without its own bath and toilet. Beach stands just a few steps from the water's edge, closer to the sea than any other Benesse House building, and every room is a suite. The Beach Suite is 61 sq m for 1 to 3 guests, sleeping up to 3 with an extra bed, and its spacious, open layout suits family stays well. Each of the 65 rooms displays its own artwork. Televisions are not installed as standard, but one can be set up for an additional 1,000 yen.
Dining
The restaurants are Terrace Restaurant (French cuisine) and Museum Restaurant Japanese Cuisine Issen. The museum also has a cafe for light meals and drinks during the day. Restaurants take reservations only, and you need to book in advance whatever your accommodation plan. Tables are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so a restaurant cannot be used once it is fully booked. On plans that include breakfast, a buffet is served at Terrace Restaurant from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and breakfast is free for co-sleeping children aged 5 and under. Depending on reservation numbers, breakfast may change from the buffet to an American breakfast. Meals accommodating allergies can be arranged, but guests are asked not to bring children aged 5 and under to Museum Restaurant Japanese Cuisine Issen at dinner.

Art and the Property
Staying guests can enter Benesse House Museum free of charge as many times as they like during their stay. The gallery tour, which meets at Benesse House Museum, runs daily from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., and the Park art tour, which meets in front of the Park front desk, runs daily from 5:20 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Both are free and need no reservation. Art facilities on Naoshima can be re-entered during your stay, though some are excluded, such as Kinza and Minamidera in the Art House Project. Many art facilities are closed on Mondays, so please check in advance whether the museum facilities on the island and the surrounding islands are open. Accommodation charges are not refunded because of museum closures. Benesse House Spa is open by reservation from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with last reception at 6 p.m.
Access
To reach Naoshima, take the Shikoku Kisen ferry from Takamatsu Port to Miyanoura Port (about 50 minutes), or the Shikoku Kisen ferry or a small passenger boat from Uno Port (about 20 minutes). From Miyanoura Port it is about 10 minutes by car. Staying guests can ride the guest-only bus, which runs to match ferry arrivals and departures, with no reservation needed. If you board at Miyanoura Port, the driver takes your luggage and delivers it to your room as soon as your room is ready. If you arrive on Naoshima at 7:15 p.m. or later, a dedicated car is arranged instead, and you need to request it when booking. Parking for 20 cars is free with no reservation needed, but general vehicles are not allowed into the Benesse Art Site Naoshima area, so give the staff at the entrance to the grounds the name on your booking and follow their instructions. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and checkout is at 11 a.m.
